Riding in an elevator today, I saw the sign:

DO NOT PANIC

IF THE ELEVATOR STALLS

YOU WILL NOT SUFFOCATE

Missing, of course, were the standard signs telling you the elevator’s carrying capacity and what to do in case of emergency (press the alarm button and pick up the phone for help, or use your own phone, and wait for help).

I thought that the primary worry about stalled elevators was that it would, at some point, fall, not so much about suffocation. I can’t say I know so much about the workings of elevators, but it took about a second before I looked up to the ceiling of the elevator, which had open vents into the elevator shaft.

Maybe it’s a reminder for claustrophobic people, so they don’t have a panic attack or hyperventilate in the case of a stall. Although knowing that there is airflow probably wouldn’t stop one, because they’re still in that little box they can’t get out of…

Nonetheless, it made me smile.
